Rockingham sits on the shore of Cockburn Sound. It takes its name from the settler ship that ran aground on the beach in 1830.
Most of the suburb went up from the 1960s onwards, with the fastest growth through the 70s and 80s. Beach cottages and modest retirement villas built during that period still make up a lot of the older streets. Since the 2000s, newer homes and foreshore apartments have been added.
